OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators were on the verge of a massive comeback, only to fall short in overtime. After overcoming a three-goal deficit the Senators forced the game to overtime only to watch it slip away as Seth Jones scored the winner 3:49 into the extra period as the Nashville Predators defeated the Senators 4-3 Monday night. Ryan Ellis broke in alone on goaltender Robin Lehner and Jones was there to bang home the loose puck. "It was a tough one to slip away and we almost gave it away," said Jones. "We need all the points we can get right now so it was nice to pull away with two." The win allowed the Predators (27-28-10) to snap a four-game losing streak. The Senators say they take solace in earning the single point, but at the same time know they need to be better if they hope to stay in the playoff race. "The way the game was looking going into the third period it looked pretty bleak for us to get that one point so well take the positive," said Ottawas Marc Methot. "It would have been nice to get two, but were happy with the resiliency we showed at the end." Nick Spaling, Craig Smith and Eric Nystrom also scored for Nashville. Pekka Rinne faced 37 shots. This was Rinnes first victory in four starts since returning from injury. Jared Cowen, Methot and Jason Spezza scored for the Senators (28-25-12). Craig Anderson allowed three goals on 29 shots before leaving the game early in the third. Lehner faced 13 shots in relief. Senators coach Paul MacLean said he didnt have an immediate update on Anderson, but didnt believe it was anything serious. Holding a 3-0 lead the Predators nearly let the game slip away in the third as the Senators scored twice in a span of 2:39. "I thought we played real well, especially the first two periods," said Nashvilles Mike Fisher. "We thought we were the better team, but then gave them a little life in the third and the crowd came alive for them and before you knew it, it was 3-3." Spezza tied the game with 67 seconds remaining in regulation. The newly acquired Ales Hemsky, who had three assists, found Spezza at the side of the net and the Senators captain banged it in. "We knew we had to make a push in the third and it showed a lot of character for us to get a point," said Spezza. "We kept coming and coming, but it sure would have been nice to pull that one out in overtime." The comeback started midway through the third, as Cowen was able to find the puck through traffic in front and push it past Rinne. Spezza picked up his second assist of the night as he found a surging Methot to make it a 3-2 game at the halfway mark. The Predators three unanswered second period goals appeared to make this game look all but decided. "We normally do a better job of locking these games down," said Predators head coach Barry Trotz. Anderson could hardly be blamed for any of the goals as he was the victim of two redirections and a giveaway. Andersons night came to an end at 4:10 of the third after he was hit in the head by teammate Milan Michalek. On the first goal Spaling tipped a Michael Del Zotto point shot at the eight-minute mark of the second. Less than two minutes later Colin Wilson won the faceoff in the Senators end and got the puck to Jones on the point. The blue liner then passed it to Mattias Ekholm, who took a shot that Smith re-directed in front. The Predators made it 3-0 on Nystroms unassisted goal. Methot went to clear the puck and it landed directly on Nystroms stick for the easy finish on Anderson. A scoreless first period was highlighted by the damage inflicted by Shea Webers powerful shot. First, Anderson dropped to the ice after taking a Weber shot in the shoulder and minutes later Cody Ceci took a shot to the head that left him with a lacerated right ear. He did not return to the game. "You never want to see anyone go down like that," said Weber. "Hopefully hes doing all right because thats nothing you ever want to see." Following the game Ceci tweeted, "Thanks for all your concerns just a cut and a little shaken up should be back at it soon enough." Notes: The Senators were without LW Clarke MacArthur as he has a hand injury, but is expected to return for Saturdays game against Montreal. D Patrick Wiercioch, was a healthy scratch for the Senatorsa LW Gabriel Bourque and D Victor Bartley were healthy scratches for the Predatorsa. The CIS Mens Basketball Champion Carleton Ravens were honoured before the game and took part in the ceremonial puck drop. Mike Webster Youth Jersey . DArnaud hit one of three doubles for the Mets as they took a 4-0 lead in the first. Then the catchers seventh home run of the season broke the game open in the fifth. The 41-year-old Colon (10-8) retired the first 20 batters in his last outing Wednesday against Seattle, eventually allowing two runs on three hits in 7 1-3 innings in a 3-2 win. Louis Lipps Steelers Jersey . Already owning gold from competition in Vancouver in 2010, Loch posted a combined four-run time of 3:27.526. That included a track-record third run of 51. Jack Ham Youth Jersey .Pete Morelli said the back judge threw a flag on Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens on a pass to Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew in Dallas 24-20 wild-card win Sunday. But the head linesman said there wasnt enough contact and that Hitchens was face-guarding, which isnt a penalty in the NFL. ST. LOUIS -- Joe Kelly acted like an ace whos been here before, oblivious to the pennant race and working out of jams. The St. Louis Cardinals rediscovered their offence, too. Carlos Beltran had RBIs his first two at-bats to help chase A.J. Burnett early and Kelly beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for the third straight time in a 12-8 rout Friday night that pulled the Cardinals within a half-game of the NL Central leaders. "Youve just got to make pitches when you need to," Kelly said. "I just tried to battle ... and make pitches when I needed to." Burnett (7-10) gave up five runs in three innings, his shortest outing of the year, and the Cardinals opened a seven-run seventh with nine straight hits off three relievers including Yadier Molinas three-run homer off Bryan Morris. The Pirates have lost two straight, both blowouts, and remain a win shy of clinching their first winning season since 1992. "I felt like I could have stayed out there longer and kept us in it, but thats not my choice, not my decision," Burnett said. "But youve got to take one positive from tonight and thats this team and what they did to the final out." Manager Clint Hurdle said the 82nd win will probably mean most to Neil Walker "growing up a Pittsburgh kid." "He had some emotion the other night and theres some guys on the coaching staff, but I mean, its part of the game," Hurdle added. "Its a mile marker on the road." Kelly (8-3) has been the stopper lately for a struggling rotation, winning five straight starts. Hes 8-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 11 appearances since getting the fifth spot in late June and then waiting 14 days because of days off in the schedule to make that start. Leadoff man Matt Carpenter tripled and doubled to tie Albert Pujols season record of 98 hits in 2008 at 8-year-old Busch Stadium, also his major league high 55th multihit game. Jon Jay, coming off a 1-for-20 trip, had three hits and three RBIs. "Wow, I wasnt aware of that," Carpenter said. "Thats pretty cool. I thought we just did a real good job of grinding out at-bats and being aggressive in the strike zone. "They made some mistakes over the plate and we did a real good job of taking advantage." The Pirates have scored two runs in 18 innings against Kelly. The only thing the right-hander hasnt done is save the bullpen, working six innings in each of his last five starts with a season best of 6 1-3 innings.dddddddddddd Pittsburgh had five baserunners and no runs the first two innings and stranded 10 runners in six innings against Kelly, who allowed one run and eight hits. Pedro Alvarez, who grounded out with the bases loaded to end the first, had an RBI single in the fifth. The Cardinals led 12-1 after seven innings but needed Edward Mujica to get the final out for his 36th save in 39 chances. Josh Harrison hit a two-run pinch-hit homer off Jake Westbrook in a four-run eighth and Jose Tabata hit a two-run double off Carlos Martinez in a three-run ninth before Harrison flied out with two men on to end a game that lasted 3 hours and 47 minutes. The Cardinals rebounded from a 2-5 trip in which they scored two or fewer runs five times, one of them against Burnett in a 7-1 loss Aug. 31. Burnett had been 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA in five starts against the Cardinals, but facing them in consecutive starts led to his fastest exit since he allowed 12 earned runs in 2 2-3 innings, including two homers and seven RBIs by Beltran, in a 12-3 loss May 2, 2012, also in St. Louis. "I dont make pitches here or I havent," Burnett said. "I will, I will. When I missed tonight, I missed middle." Carpenter tripled to open a three-run third and Jay, Matt Holliday and Beltran followed with RBI doubles for a 5-0 lead. The Cardinals started fast in the first with a walk and two singles the first four at-bats. "I think we could all tell early on his command wasnt really used to what were used to seeing from him," Carpenter said of Burnett. The first four hitters in the Cardinals order totalled 10 hits and eight RBIs. NOTES: Cardinals reliever John Axford was ejected in the eighth after hitting pinch-hitter Tony Sanchez with a pitch after warnings were issued earlier in the game, with manager Mike Matheny also getting the boot. ... Eighth-place hitter Daniel Descalso doubled to open the seventh and flied out for the first out. The Cardinals were three hits shy of matching the major league record of 12 straight hits to start an inning by St. Louis on Sept. 17, 1920, against the Boston Braves and Brooklyn on June 23, 1930, against the Pirates. ... Pete Kozma of the Cardinals had an infield hit in the seventh to end an 0-for-33 slump. ' ' '
