BALTIMORE -- Held in check by Baltimores pitchers for 18 consecutive innings, the Boston Red Sox finally played like the highest-scoring team in the major leagues. Mike Carp and Jonny Gomes homered to back an effective pitching performance by John Lackey, and Boston beat the Orioles 5-4 Saturday to end a five-game losing streak in Baltimore. After dropping the first two games of the series, the Red Sox fell into an early 2-0 hole before bouncing back. Carps home run snapped an 18-inning scoring drought in the fourth, and Gomes made it 5-2 in the sixth with a solo shot that chased Baltimore starter Freddy Garcia (3-4). Every starter except for Jarrod Saltalamacchia got at least one hit, including two by Gomes. Boston finished with nine hits, four for extra bases. "Us getting shut outs not going to last too long," Gomes said. "Weve got some pretty good hitters on this team." Including Carp, whos been pressed into action at first base since Mike Napoli fell ill in the third inning of Thursday nights game. Napoli was sent back to Boston on Saturday so team doctors can determine why hes been feeling groggy over the past few days. Carp insisted that the Red Sox didnt come into the game pressing to break out of their offensive funk. "We dont think about that," he said. "We feel like were going to mash every day. It just takes one guy to get going, fortunately today it was me. Tomorrow its going to be another guy and so on and so forth." The victory increased Bostons lead over second-place Baltimore in the AL East to 2 1/2 games. The Red Sox lost three games at Camden Yards last September and were 0-2 this season, their longest dry spell in Baltimore since a seven-game stretch in 1969-70. Lackey (4-5) gave up two runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings to improve to 12-4 lifetime against the Orioles. It was the right-handers first win since May 25, even though hes allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts this season. Former Oriole Koji Uehara struck out the side in the eighth and Andrew Bailey gave up a two-run homer to Matt Wieters in the ninth before securing his eighth save. The game ended when pinch-runner Alexi Casilla took off from first base on a one-out liner to right by Ryan Flaherty. Shane Victorino made the catch without much difficulty and threw out Casilla for the double play. "Flaherty hit that ball very good," Casilla said. "He crushed it over my head. I kind of started running and looked where Victorino was playing and thought no chance he was going to catch that ball. I guess I kept running. Bad read." Baltimores Manny Machado extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games and hit his major league leading 31st double. Despite the loss, Baltimore has won 13 of its last 18 games against the Red Sox. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead before Lackey got an out. After Nate McLouth singled off the pitchers foot and scored on a double by Machado, Nick Markakis singled and Adam Jones drove in a run with an infield hit. Lackey avoided further damage by retiring Wieters and J.J. Hardy with runners at second and third. "It might have been the key to the game," Boston manager John Farrell said. Lackey said, "Cant really do much about the first couple guys getting on once theyre on, so you just try to minimize it the best you can." David Ortiz led off the Boston second inning with a liner to centre that bounced off the wall and eluded Jones. The husky man known as "Big Papi" legged it out for his second triple this month; the last time Ortiz had two triples in a season was 2006. With Ortiz on third, Carp drew a walk before Garcia got three straight outs. The Red Sox ended their season-high scoring drought with a three-run fourth. After Dustin Pedroia singled and Carp homered to tie it, Gomes singled and Stephen Drew ended a 4-for-31 skid with an RBI double. Pedroias single came after home plate umpire Jeff Nelson ruled he fouled off a third strike. In reality, Pedroia missed it. "It was a break for us," Pedroia said. "I just said I thought I fouled that. Then he said, Foul ball. I thought I hit something. It was probably the ground. I dont know." Boston made it 4-2 in the fifth. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single, his first hit in 12 at-bats during this series. He stole second, advanced on a bunt and scored on Pedroias grounder to shortstop. Baltimore put runners at the corners with no outs in the bottom half, but Lackey worked out of the jam. Thats just one reason why Philadelphia (5-8) has lost six of seven, including four in a row.Self-inflicted wounds and self-inflicted penalties have (prevented) us from maybe winning a few more games, coach Doug Pederson said. The Ravens followed their 3-0 start with four straight defeats, but have rebounded to remain in the thick of the playoff chase. Baltimore (7-6) will win the AFC North if it defeats Philadelphia on Sunday, Pittsburgh on Christmas Day and Cincinnati in the finale. The Steelers game doesnt happen unless we win this game, Ravens safety Eric Weddle said. The Steelers game is on the backburner right now. Its all about Philly.Baltimore is on the rebound after losing at New England 30-23 on Monday night. The Ravens fell into a 23-3 hole before getting back into the game by taking advantage of two turnovers by the Patriots, but the overall performance of the team was disappointing following three wins in four weeks.Obviously, we werent good enough to beat the Patriots, Weddle said. Thats really what the reality comes down to, but that doesnt mean that our ultimate goal to win the division and get in the playoffs isnt attainable. Some things to know about the first meeting between Baltimore and Philadelphia since 2012:FIRING AWAY: Wentz is 74 passes away from breaking Donovan McNabbs team record for attempts in one season.Despite Pedersons desire to call a balanced game, he has relied more on the pass. Wentz has thrown 44.7 passes per game over the last seven after averaging 30.8 in the first six.I think its putting him in a tough situation, Pederson said. I would love to be able to manage it and lean on that offensive line more with the run game. Obviously, were going against a tough run defense this week, and yet we still have to be patient with that to help our quarterback.NEED TO RUN: Like the Eagles, the Ravens have all but abandoned the run recently.Joe Flacco threw 52 passes against the Patriots, whille the running game generated only 42 yards on 14 attempts.ddddddddddddThere is no doubt we are going to have to run the ball, Flacco said. We have to be able to hand the ball off and get yardage out of it because then it is going to get the play-action game going a little bit more and make it that much better.Baltimore owns the 28th-ranked rushing attack. Terrance West has the teams lone 100-yard game, against Oakland in Week 4.NO SACK ATTACK: The Eagles have only eight sacks in the last seven games after getting 20 in the first six games.Philadelphia has proven pass rushers with big contracts putting no pressure on quarterbacks. Fletcher Cox leads the way with 5 1/2 sacks, but he went eight straight games without one. Brandon Graham has two in the last 10 games and Vinny Curry has 1 1/2.Youve got to be careful with judging it only on sacks, but sacks do affect the game, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. Not only do you stop drives and get them for lost-yardage plays, but there is a high incidence of quarterbacks either getting tipped balls or throwing when theyre getting hit and youre getting interceptions or fumbles. Those are the plays that weve been missing.SMITH NEEDED: The Ravens could be without standout cornerback Jimmy Smith, who sprained an ankle against the Patriots. With Smith out, Tom Brady torched Baltimore for 406 yards and three touchdowns. Were not worried about who is going to play or who is not going to play, Weddle insisted. Well play with the guys we have out there. If Smith cant go, that will put additional pressure on rookie cornerback Tavon Young, who knocked away two passes and had four solo tackles against New England. Its really important that Tavon is focused and ready to go, coach John Harbaugh said.HAPPY RETURNS: Michael Campanaro will likely return kicks for the Ravens, who cut veteran Devin Hester on Tuesday.Activated from the practice squad Wednesday, Campanaro has five career punt returns for an average of 13.2 yards and is averaging 26.3 yards on three career kickoff returns.Lardarius Webb is also an option for returning punts, though hes the starting safety.---AP Sports Writer Rob Maaddi in Philadelphia contributed.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFLCheap Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap NBA Jerseys [url=http://www.jerseysnhlfromchina.us/]Wholesale NHL Jerses
